Cloud vs. On-Prem · Straight Talk From Engineers

Cloud or on-premise phone system? Here's how we'd decide for your building.

We install both — ESI systems on-site and NUSO cloud voice — so we don't need to sell you one over the other. This page is the conversation we'd have across your conference table, minus the drive.

Which one fits your building?

Neither is "better." One is usually right for how your offices actually work — here's how we think about it, consideration by consideration.

Consideration
On-premise ESI eSIP Evolution · hybrid with eCloud
Cloud-hosted NUSO UCaaS · NUSO partner
Where the system lives
A PBX in your building (ESI eSIP Evolution), or ESI's hosted eCloud. Your phones, your server room.
In carrier data centers. Nothing to host on-site — just phones and a good internet connection.
Upfront vs. monthly
Buy the hardware once; lower monthly after that. Makes sense when you plan to keep it 7–10 years.
Little upfront; a per-seat monthly fee. Easier to scale up and down with headcount.
If the internet goes down
Calls between desks keep working. Outside calls depend on how your lines come in — we design that with you.
Desk phones need internet. Calls fail over to the mobile app or forward to cell — planned ahead, not in the moment.
Remote & multi-site
Works well with a main office plus ESI's mobile and softphone apps for people on the move.
Built for it. Every location and home office is one system — same extensions, same voicemail.
Control & compliance
Maximum control. Call recordings and configuration stay in your building — the usual pick for banks, clinics, and firms with audit needs.
Vendor-managed updates and security; recordings and data live in the provider's cloud under their agreements.
Who maintains it
We do — on-site. Programming, parts, and moves/adds/changes are handled by the engineers who installed it.
The provider runs the platform; we manage your account, phones, and call flows so you never call a carrier help desk.
Typical fit
One or a few locations, heavy desk-phone use, long ownership horizon.
Distributed teams, many small sites, frequent growth or turnover.
The hybrid answer. Plenty of offices land in between — an ESI system on-site for the main office, with cloud phones for satellite locations and people who work from anywhere. It's not a compromise; it's usually the design that matches how a business actually takes calls.
Three Questions That Usually Decide It

Answer these and the choice gets a lot clearer.

1

How many locations and remote people?

One building with everyone at a desk points on-prem. Several small sites, home offices, or a sales team on the road points cloud — or hybrid.

2

What happens to you if the internet drops for an hour?

If desk-to-desk calling has to keep working no matter what, on-prem earns its keep. If "everyone grabs their cell and the app" is fine, cloud's failover is enough.

3

Do you want to own it or subscribe to it?

Buying a system you'll keep for years usually costs less over its life. A monthly per-seat fee costs less to start and flexes with headcount. Both are legitimate — it's a finance question as much as a phone question.

What We Actually Install

One partner, both paths.

Whichever way you go, the same local engineers design it, install it, and answer the phone afterward.

On-Premise & Hybrid

ESI eSIP Evolution Series

ESI's on-premise IP phone system, sized and programmed for your offices, with ESI ePhones on the desks and the ePhoneGo app for people on the move. Hybrid-ready when you want cloud seats alongside it.

Cloud-Hosted

NUSO UCaaS — or ESI eCloud

Carrier-grade hosted voice with desktop and mobile apps and built-in redundancy. Want to stay in the ESI family? ESI's eCloud PBX gives you a cloud system with the same ePhones and the eConsole portal.
